Given first to Adam and Eve. • They misused their freedom. • But God did not give up on the rest of His children. • Decided to come down and break down every barrier between Him and us. • Granted us freedom again.
What are we free from?! • A lot of people don’t actually understand freedom. • Some people think that being free means that whenever I feel like doing something, I do it, even if it’s wrong. • Does this seem like freedom? • It’s not freedom, it’s actually slavery to sin.
So what is freedom then? "Stand fast, therefore, in the liberty in which Christ has made us free, do not be entangled again with the yoke of bondage." Galatians 5:1 • Free from the bondage of sin. • Sin does not control me.
How am I supposed to use my Freedom? • Seek to get back to God; sin is no longer a captive of me, holding me back. I’m free to be with God. No more barriers. Christ broke down every barrier. “as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God.” (1 Peter 2:16)
Can’t just stop sin on the surface, must loosen the bond, cut if out from the root.
True freedom is only found in God. • From Psalm 146 “ The LORD gives freedom to the prisoners… The LORD raises those who are bowed down;” • “I am the way, the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) • “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”(John 8:32)
“Thereis therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. • Forthe law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:1-2)
Important side of freedom… Responsibility. • Liberty is to shoulder responsibility. • Having goals in life.
If I want to get an A+ in math… I should I shouldn’t Study Pay attention in class Solve problems (Practice A LOT!) Put in effort! Ignore my studies Skip classes Do no work (Never practice) Put no effort.
Our most important goal should be… Our Heavenly Life!
A little exercise…. Write down… 2steps you want to take in order to grow in your spiritual life. 2things you want to avoid to do (or change) in your spiritual life. • We just said that the most important goal we should have is our heavenly life • So what are the steps we want to take in order to achieve this goal through God’s grace? Pray and ask God to help you use the freedom He gave you to draw closer to Him!
For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. (Galatians 5:23)
Memory Verse • “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify.” (1 Corinthians 10:23)
