  1. Leica GPS Spider Setting the Standard for GPS Networks Mark Burbidge MRICS MinstCES GNSS Network Manager – Leica Geosystems

  2. Leica SmartNet Technology • First 24/7 commercial national GPS network correction service for Great Britain • Available since December 05 • Offering a continuous accurate, reliable, robust, traceable and repeatable national GNSS network solution, based on a common datum • Services include: RTK & DGPS Solutions. Available to everyone with a DGPS/RTK receiver • Internet positioning in the field via Mobile GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)

  3. Leica SmartNet - Reference Stations • Ordnance Survey (OS) currently have a national network of over 90 reference stations called OS Net • Through commercial partnership, OS have provided Leica Geosystems with raw data feed from OS Net • Ordnance Survey (OS) intend to maintain and add further stations

  4. Leica SmartNet – Strengthening the Network • Leica intend to add value with the deployment of a further 40+ stations • Leica intend to add value by increasing the opportunities for a full GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) network. Tracking all available signals from GPS, GLONASS and the future Galileo • Strengthening the network increases the survey quality while providing redundancy, accuracy, density and reliability

  5. Leica SmartNet - Reference Station Comms Receiver Communication: • NTRIP raw data feed from OS Net • Direct Serial • Modem, Analog or ISDN • TCP/IP (LAN, Internet, NTRIP) Receiver Types: • Leica System 500 • Leica System 1200 • 3rd party receivers and raw data formats

  6. Leica SmartNet – Spider Network Software • Using an array of reference stations • Real time Network processing • Powerful zero-difference algorithm • Master Auxiliary Concept (MAC) Providing Network RTK Corrections in Standard RTCM V3.0 Format • Modelled Corrections together with a traceable set of multiple reference stations • CM RTK accuracy • Sub metre DGPS

  7. Leica SmartNet – Network RTK • Increased Coverage • Improved availability • Best Reliability • Faster Rover initialisations • Consistent high accuracy • Higher productivity • No local base station required • Working on a common datum B E N E F I T S Arrive on site, switch on and start working!

  8. Leica SmartNet – Network RTK Corrections • SpiderNET Corrections - MAX : • Network RTK Standard RTCM 3.0 Format with Leica Master-Auxiliary concept • Ideal for broadcast transmission • For Rover to achieve best performance • Optimised bandwidth to minimise transmission cost • Always best cell of fixed network sites. • Automatic reselection when rover moves away • Communication: • Mobile Internet GPRS • GSM Access Router • Landline & Wireless • TCP/IP • NTRIP Caster & Server

  9. Leica SmartNet – Network RTK Corrections • SpiderNET Corrections – i-MAX : • i - Individualsed Network RTK • Optimised for each rover location • Provided in standard baseline RTK formats (RTCM V2.3, Leica) • Ideal for legacy receivers that cannot use MAX • Always best cell of fixed network sites • Automatic reselection when rover moves away • Communication: • Mobile Internet GPRS • GSM Access Router • Landline & Wireless • TCP/IP • NTRIP Caster & Server

  10. Correction Differences of the Aux. relative to the Master Receiving Corrections for Master and Correction Differences for the Auxiliary ... Network Estimation process incl. Ambiguity Resolution, for Master and of Correction Differences for each Auxiliary. Rover Network Transmission Concept • One Master Reference Station • Some Auxiliary Reference Stations  One Network Cell Auxiliary Reference Station D Auxiliary Reference Station C Auxiliary Reference Station X Auxiliary Reference Station B Master Reference Station A Network Processing Facility

  11. Leica SmartNet – Network DGPS Corrections • SpiderNETCorrections – DGPS: • Provided in standard RTCM 9, 2 v2.3 formats • Ideal for many DGPS devices • Communication: • Mobile Internet GPRS • GSM • Landline & Wireless • TCP/IP • NTRIP Caster & Server

  12. Leica SmartNet – Control Centre Support • Real time view of Rover user access • Field support for users anywhere in the network (GB) • Complete Rover status monitoring

  13. Independent SmartNet Quality Monitoring In addition, Leica have partnered with the internationally recognised Institute of Engineering Surveying and Space Geodesy at the University of Nottingham IESSG will provide an exclusive and independent Quality Assurance service, adding additional value and security to subscribed users of SmartNet

  14. Safe, Secure, Reliable Infrastructure • Leica SmartNet servers are located at a high security, co-location data centre in London Docklands • Secure RTK Service access control • Name & Password via GPUID • Telephone number • TCP/IP address • NTRIP Authentication • Full system redundancy with backup servers are located at the data centre • Full mechanism to seamlessly switch to a backup system is immediate. Plus on-site support/monitoring

  15. SmartNet Website - Available May • Active map of stations • Rinex downloads • Raw data coordinate processing facility to nearest reference stations • Customer testimonials • Station information & health • Network Quality Monitoring • Nottingham University QA link • GNSS QC Quality Assurance • Customer testimonials
