Library and Instructional Technology • Social Software Working Group • Staff members recognized the potential of Web 2.0 applications. • Volunteers create a social software working group to explore the technology, and applications for our organization. • The concept was a “sandbox” for playing with Web 2.0, to learn about tools and develop some expertise. • We advise working groups looking to use Web 2.0 technology, but have no specific charge to implement applications. A Web 2.0 Sandbox • Faculty member using Facebook instead of Blackboard for course management. • Blogs for Library news, for student groups working in other states and countries. • An ITEC group working on podcasting lectures and assignments, and YouTube training videos. • IM for Library reference & computer technology questions. • Wikis for working group communications • Library liaison via blogs and wiki Wikis, PB Wiki, Flickr, Del.icio.us, podcasting, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, Library Thing, Google Jockeying, Twitter, blogs, mashups, IM, Moveable Type, RSS feeds, Sharepoint, Second Life, Google Earth, Wikipedia, Technorati, Pronetos Inspiration from forward-thinking information vendors; Stephen Abram of SirsiDynix , R.J. Pittman of Groxis, lead to a PowerPoint presentation for Library and IT staff and generated interest.
