Prime Factorization SWBAT find the prime factorization of a number.
Warm Up 1. Find the GCF of 50 and 25. 2. Plot the point (6, 2) on a coordinate plane. 3. Solve: 2394 ÷ 17
Vocab • What is a prime number? • What does it mean to “factor” • Prime Factorization: Finding which prime numbers multiply together to equal a particular number • We factor these prime numbers out just like the factor ladder, or we can use a factor tree
Rules • Each number only has ONE prime factorization. • Since 1 is neither prime nor composite, we do not use 1 in our factor string • List the numbers from LEAST to GREATEST • Numbers that occur more than once can be shown using exponents • Exponent: Shows how many times to multiply the base times itself
Example • Prime factorization of 24
Your Turn! • Work independently on the worksheet. The top of the sheet gives further explanation, so make sure you read over it.
Exit Ticket • What is a prime number? • Find the prime factorization of 60. • Describe what we learned today, in your own words, to a student who was absent.
