2009 Summer Bioinformatics Workshop July 6–August 13, Mon- Thur Morning Session Description 9:30am – MR-044 11:00am – NAC 1/102 Pathways Bioinformatics & Biomolecular Center Genomics and Structural Bioinformatics (Sci316.01, 3 credits) Lecture and computer simulations: 9:30am-12:00noon; Location: MR-044, Computer room, Science Division Instructors:Dr. Sihong Wang (Molecular Genetics, Biomedical Engineering, CCNY) Dr. Y. Gosser (Bioinformatics, Grove School of Engineering, CCNY) This interdisciplinary course introduces basic concepts of bioinformatics, databases, and computational tools in molecular genetics, and protein structure and engineering. We will use ' in silico' experiments to learn about eukaryotic gene structure, gene families, gene cloning, sequencing and annotation, gene expression and gene chip, miRNA and gene silencing, mass spectrometry and protein sequencing, protein structure visualization and modeling using open source software. Prime Time Lectures: 11:00am-12:00 noon, Location: Nac 1/ 102 (Including field trips to Microscope laboratories,New York Structural Biology Center) Distinguished scientists, professors, and artists from Columbia University, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Cornell Medical School, NYU Medical School, Brook Haven National Lab, University of Houston, the City College of New York, and CUNY Graduate Center are invited to give lectures in structural genomics, synchrotron x-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, microscope and CryoEM, microarray technology, phylogenetics, gene therapy, bioethics, psychology, bionanotechnology, mathematical magics, and art & science.
