Vocabulary • radical: a person who takes extreme political positions • judicial review: principle that states that the Supreme Court has the final say in interpreting the Constitution • Federalist: political party of Hamilton and Adams; supported a strong central government • Democratic-Republican: Jefferson’s political party; feared a strong central government

  3. Election of 1800 • Federalist: John Adams • Democratic-Republican: Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr • Jefferson and Burr tied and the House of Representatives had to break the tie • Jefferson finally chosen after 35 votes.

  4. Jefferson as President • Wanted the government to have less power: • Reduced the number of federal employees • Reduced the size of the military • Ended Alien and Sedition Acts and released prisoners • Ended Whiskey Tax and other taxes

  5. Marbury v. Madison (1803) • Supreme Court Case • The Court overturned the Judiciary Act of 1789 • The first time the Judicial Branch overturned an act of Congress • Historical impact: The Supreme Court has the final authority on the meaning of the Constitution
