Lesson Objectives • Explain the need for secondary storage. • Describe common storage technologies such as optical, magnetic and solid state. • Describe flash memory. • Select suitable storage devices and storage media for a given application and justify their choice using characteristics such as capacity, speed, portability, durability and reliability.
Primary Storage • What are the two types of primary storage? • Which one is Read Only and runs the boot program? • Which one holds information about software and applications that are running?
Secondary Storage • Secondary storage is used to store data and programs when the power is switched off. • Why do we need secondary storage? • RAM is volatile so the contents are lost if the power is switched off; • ROM can only store pre-programmed data and programs
