EIRAC: What is it? • EIRAC is an initiative of the European Intermodal industry, the European Commission and the EU member and associated states. • Launched on May 3rd, 2005 • 50 keyplayers • Contribute to a better repartition between the different modes of transportation to make Europe: • coping with growth • lowering the burden on environment • enhancing competitiveness
What does EIRAC deal with? • Competitiveness of Intermodal transport through: Change, Innovation, Research • Today's repartition between the different type of transportation is based only on traditional parameters: lead time, costs, predictable delivery time • New parameters: safety, security, sustainable solutions, which are often considered as constraints, still • Assumption: market incentives are not enough as a source of motivation
Contribution to change The Strategic Intermodal Research Agenda Proposals for research topics The Implementation Plan The Vision
Current “EIRAC” Projects • SMART-CM: A service platform for secure and interoperable B2B and B2C data communications in global door-to-door container transport management using ubiquitous track & trace technologies • INTEGRITY: development of Shared Integrated Container Information System (SICIS) allowing authorised companies and authorities to access planning and status information of selected consignments
Current “EIRAC” Projects • BE Logic: to develop a benchmarking methodology to assess transport & logistics performance, and support the development of a quality system for logistics • SuperGreen: Identification and Benchmarking of Green Corridors based on selected KPIs, and delivery of Policy Recommendations to the EU to further develop Green Corridors
Current “EIRAC” Projects • CO3: Developing Collaboration Concepts for Co-modality defining how to fairly split costs and benefits of collaboration and setting the rules to put this in practice
Change in the Priorities – Climate Issues Consequences on Logistics • Stop of Terminal Operation • Vessels delayed • Railroads Blocked • European logistics system got unreliable
Change in the Priorities – Climate Issues 2nd February 2007 Paris (IPCC): Increase in average global temperature is most probably due to anthropogenic GHG Sources: IPCC 2007
Decarbonisation: some background info (1) CO2 emissions by sector, EU27
Decarbonisation: some background info (2) CO2 emissions from transport by mode, EU27
FreightVision 2050 40% Economic Growth 80% Reduction of GHG emissions
Decarbonisation: Signs from the market DHL – GOGREEN To reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2020 (2007 baseline) Canon – Environmental Logistics Working Group To reduce CO2 emissions through modal shifts around the world P&G – Project Tina To increase our (Eur.) rail transportation from 10% to 30% by 2015 Euromax Terminal Most sustainable containerterminal in the world IKEA – IWAY Standard Suppliers shall have a practical plan in place to reduce CO2 emissions due to transportation Environmental care MARS Research has shown that Mars is one of the least environmental polluting companies in Europe. Measures: Energy saving, Recycling, Waste separation CO-3 Collaboration in supply chain to be Sustainable 14
EIRAC Updated Mission Decarbonise the Supply Chain supporting growth in a sustainable way through collaboration between industries, transport modes and governments. Supply Chain is made of physical, financial and information flows from the source of raw materials to the door of the consumer, and reverse Sustainable addresses social, economic and environmental issues
How EIRAC moves • Cooperate/coordinate all existing activities • Supportive to all Technical platforms • Change from research only to research and sharing knowledge • Transforming EIRAC into a new platform…
Updated Agenda Top Priority Research Topics: Eco Efficient Terminals Capability of Improving and Exploiting Capacity Green Corridor Demonstration Product End of Life - Sustainable Recycling More on implementation of innovation and change in the new EIRAC agenda, in November 2010
