  2. Jargon is language specifically used in a particular field, profession, or group. • When you work in a particular field, you will have advanced knowledge about the subject.

  3. You will know the definitions of words commonly used in that field. • People who are not familiar with the field may have a hard time understanding the jargon.

  4. They will have to use context clues to determine the meanings of unfamiliar words. • Jargon is used in virtually every field, profession, or group.

  5. Some classifications of jargon include: • computers/technical • medical • legal • sports • meteorology • business • naval/army

  6. You already know the definitions to some jargon just from reading, watching TV, and noticing things in the real world. • Courtroom shows on TV use words like "plaintiff," "defendant," "countersuit," and "testimony."

  7. You are hearing legal jargon and learning what each word means by context clues. • You should know some jargon from different fields just by using your knowledge of the real world.

  8. Next are some examples of jargon and technical words that you should know. Think about the definition of each word. • Where have you heard these words used before? If you are not sure about a definition, look it up in the dictionary.

  9. Computers: interface, USB, memory, right click • Meteorology: jet stream, advisory, UV index, scattered showers • Business: support, bottom line, merger, contracting • Naval/Army: fleet, sonar, intelligence, brigade
