Jargon. Jargon is any language that acts as a barrier rather than a pathway to communication. The expression is unclear, wordy, weak, awkward, ugly or imprecise. When words exclude, mystify, confuse or obscure truth, the language fails to do its job: communicate! Avoid this type of jargon!.

  2. Jargon is any language that acts as a barrier rather than a pathway to communication. The expression is unclear, wordy, weak, awkward, ugly or imprecise. When words exclude, mystify, confuse or obscure truth, the language fails to do its job: communicate! Avoid this type of jargon!

  3. Jargon is also specialized language used in, for example, a science, where it is often appropriate. • This use of jargon is appropriate because it abbreviates.

  4. Varieties ofJargon • Overused Words: decision-making process, learning process, writing process, around 2. Wordy Expressions: on a regular basis, at this point in time, along the lines of, militate against, make a determination of, engage in a power-play situation, emergency type situation, educational concept, thunderstorm activity

  9. Some Causes of Jargon: • Using unnecessary passive stretchers and orphan pronouns • Overusing “to be” and its forms • Using imprecise, vague words • Using big words where small words will do • Using unnecessary words, using too many prepositional phrases

  10. Example: • Finalization of the implementation of the program, which, it had been decided by the faculty, would facilitate forward movement towards goal achievement was made operational in the penultimate semester.
