  1. What is GIS? Why GIS? How to benefit from GIS?

  2. D A T A • Location of data: How many? What kind? Where? • Scale of data: Local to global. • Data presentation: Words, charts, graphs, tables or maps. • Exploring data with GIS: A comprehensive way of generating information for use from local to global scales.

  3. GIS is a system of computer software, hardware and data, and personnel to help manipulate analyze and present information that is tied to a spatial location • Spatial location– usually a geographic location • Information– visualization of analyzed data • System– linking software, hardware and data • Personnel– a thinking explorer who is key to the power of GIS

  4. Estimates are that 80% of all data has a spatial component – Data from most sciences can be analyzed “spatially”

  5. VisualizationWorth a thousand words

  6. A Unique ExampleThe Case of İstanbul and Earthquake Risk

  7. Minimize the risk of EARTHQUAKEusing GIS • İstanbul. What to do in the event of an earthquake. • For more info visit. http://www.ibb.gov.tr
