Paper, Card and Board Properties
Learning Objectives • Know the difference between “virgin” and “recycled” paper • Understand why it is worth recycling • Know the properties of a range of papers and cards
Recycling • Recycled • 34% fewer trees cut down for manufacture • Energy saving • Good consumer image • Virgin Paper • Less expensive • Very strong • Fewer harmful chemicals added • Things to know… • Virgin paper is used for food packaging to avoid contamination • Paper can be made from corn, straw, cotton and hemp and each gives different properties • Up to 30% of landfill is paper based waste which produces harmful methane when it rots • Avoiding deforestation can help global warming as trees absorb harmful CO₂
Alternatives • Corriflute or Correx is fluted polypropylene (plastic) – light, strong, weather resistant – excellent to use for external signs for example, for sale signs. • Duplex – foam based board onto which various finishes can be applied. Often seen in shops as advertising boards
Properties • Can be divided into approximately 4 categories: • Weight or thickness • Advantages • Uses • Relative cost
Tasks • Identify one advantage for recycled paper and one for virgin paper • Why is virgin paper used for food products? • What percentage of landfill is paper based? • Name two alternatives to card board • Produce a table identifying the main properties (last slide) for the following cards and boards: Newsprint, layout paper, tracing paper, sugar paper, inkjet/laser photo paper, cardboard, cartonboard, mount board, corrugated board, foam board, spiral wound tubing (Hint – use Google to search for each material and the property you need to identify
