  4. Why do we view early hominids (cavemen) as stupid???

  5. Neolithic Revolution • Shift from hunting and gathering to farming that caused a major change in human life

  6. Steady source of food • Advantages:_________________________________________ • Domestication (taming of animals) starts • Neolithic Revolution leads to SETTLEMENT, especially in fertile river valleys.

  7. Civilizations • VillageCityCivilization • Must include all 5 elements: • Advanced Cities • Specialized Workers • Complex Institutions • Record Keeping • Advanced Technology

  8. Advanced Cities • Centers of Trade • Large population

  9. Specialized Workers • Lots of extra food specialization – the development of skills in a specific kind of work • Artisans - skilled workers who make goods by hand

  10. Complex Institutions • Institution - Long-lasting pattern of organization in a community • EX: government, religion, economy

  11. Record Keeping • Scribe – professional record keeper • Cuneiform – wedge-shaped writing

  12. Advanced Technology • People look for ways to make life easier • EX: wheel
