Chinese Dragons DEFINITIONS: • Chinese dragons- Chinese dragons are legendary creatures in Chinese mythology In Chinese Dragon art dragons are drawn/painted as long, scaled, with four legs and with a serpent-like body. The Chinese dragon is sometimes used in the West as a national emblem of China. However, this usage within both the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China in Taiwan as the symbol of nation is not common. Instead, it is generally used as the symbol of culture. The dragon is also a symbol of power, strength, wealth and good luck. Chinese character for dragons (simplified version): 龙 (traditional version): 龍 (pinyin): lÓng

  3. The Spiritual Dragon (Shenlong) Why is Shenlong known to the Chinese people? Shenlong the Spiritual Dragon generates wind, rain, hail, snow for the benefit of humans. Behaviour: Likes to change the weather all the time because it gets bored generating the same weather all the time.

  4. The Winged Dragon (Yinlong) Appearance: • Huge and feathered wings. • Snake-like body. • Feathers on the tail What is Yinlong known to the Chinese people for? Believed to be the powerful dragon of Huang Di, the yellow emperor, who was later immortalized as a dragon. One legend states that Yinlong helped a man named Yu stop the river from flooding by digging long channels with his tail. Yinlong is the oldest of all the dragons. Once all dragons reach a certain age, they develop wings (Yinlong is the only dragon hat flies.)

  5. Horned Dragon(Jialong) Appearance: • 3-4 horns on the top of head. • Thin, scaly body • Five claws on each hand Why is Jialong known to Chinese people? The Horned Dragon (Jialong) is considered the most powerful dragon out of all the dragons. The Horned Dragon also produces rain but is stone deaf.
