KNIGHTSWOOD SECONDARY‘ A place of excellence and an excellent place to be’ S4 Prelim arrangements
‘OLD’ EXAM SYSTEM: • almost all S4 pupils sat prelims and final SQA Standard Grade exams (F/G or G/C) in 8 subjects • Important that all learners had study leave to help them maximise their grades in their exams in all subjects • Prelims were very important for APPEALS!
NEW NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: • new National 4 and 5 courses have replaced Standard Grade • some S4 pupils being presented at National 4 in all subject – all internally assessed but SQA verify. • Some S4 pupils being presented in a mix of National 4 and National 5 – will have prelim exams for National 5 subjects only • Some S4 pupils being presented at National 5 in all subjects ( 8 prelims for most, 6 for Dance School students) • APPEALS SYSTEM NO LONGER EXISTS!
S4 Prelim Support NO APPEALS - so why have S4 prelims at all? • support staff’s professional judgement • provides more evidence for presentation level • Gives you practice in exam techniques and experience ‘the exam room’ before you sit any May/June SQA National 5 exams So why no ‘old style’ S4 Study Leave? • Learners studying subjects at National 4 level would lose a lot of important teaching time. Not helpful to learners attainment or staff delivering the courses for the first time! • Research shows that young people do better when there is structured support provided – Supported Study and the S4 Prelim Timetable Support • To maximise the time for learning and minimise the time for assessment!
