3 metaphors • Jesus the suffering servant • Jesus the paschal lamb • Jesus the ransom
1. Jesus is the suffering servant • Jesus was Jewish. • In Jewish scriptures (Isaiah) the suffering servant of God saves the people.
2. Jesus is the Paschal Lamb • As a Jew, Jesus celebrates PASSOVER where a lamb is slaughtered and the blood SAVES the people from DEATH
3. Jesus is the Ransom for Many • Ransom- price paid to release a SLAVE.
Gentile- non Jews • Non-Jews didn’t understand the references to Jewish scripture, so those preaching about Jesus used the metaphor of a RANSOM.
Jesus- our ransom • We were SLAVES to sin and death.
Metaphors • Not to be taken literally • Might make God out to be angry, cold-hearted
