  2. Muscular System and Skeletal Systems • What is the function of the system? • What organs/tissues make up the structure of the system? • What roles do these organs play in the functioning of this system? • What are some malfunctions/diseases associated with this system?

What is the function of the Muscular system? • Locomotion or mobility • strength • heat production • shock absorption • shaping the body • maintaining posture • Plays a role in the digestive system by Providing the necessary force that pushes substances such as blood and food throughout the body.

What organs/tissues make up the structure of the Muscular system? • Muscles-A band or bundle of fibrous tissue in a human or animal body that has the ability to contract, producing movement in or maintaining the position of parts of the body • Voluntary muscles- A muscle whose movement can be consciously controlled. • Involuntary muscles- A muscle whose movement cannot be controlled voluntarily, such as the cardiac muscle. • Tendons- Tough fibrous cord of connective tissue. • Orgin- The point where the muscle attaches to the stationary bone. • Insertion- The point where the muscle attaches to the moving bone. • Flexor- The bicep muscle; a muscle that bends a joint. • Extensor- The tricep muscle; a muscle that straightens a joint.

  5. Types of Muscles • Skeletal Muscle (voluntary) • Provides structure for movement of bones 2. Cardiac Muscle (Involuntary) • Found in the heart, its contraction pumps blood 3. Smooth Muscle • Controls the movement of food through your digestive system

What are some malfunctions/diseases associated with the Muscular system? • Muscle Fatigue (oxygen debt) • Muscular dystrophy (muscles start to break down; genetic disorder) • Muscle tears (ACL, Achilles, Meniscus, ect.) • Myositis (inflammation of the voluntary muscles) • Seaver’s Disease (Stiffening of the Achilles) • Osgood-Schlatter (Bone becomes inflammed because of either the cartilage or tendon at the top of the shin becomes inflammed)

  8. Skeletal System Organs and Tissues • Bones- the hard connective tissue forming the substance of the skeleton of most vertebrates • Ligaments- a type of connective tissue that holds together the bones in a joint • Cartilage- a flexible and strong connective tissue

Skeletal System malfunctions/diseases • Leukemia- type of cancer, where the white blood cells multiply uncontrollably • Bursitis- disorder caused by the inflammation of the bursa • Osteoporosis- disease resulting in the loss of blood tissue • Sprains- stretch or tears the tissues of the ligament • Fractures- a break of the bone
