A ProposaL for Integration PPBio - LBA http://ppbio.inpa.gov.br/
In order to conduct integrated research on biodiversity over extensive areas, in 2004, the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology, created the PPBio (Programa de Pesquisa em Biodiversidade = Research Program on Biodiversity). • PPBio includes: Field Inventories Museum Collections Strengthening of Regional Research Groups Formation of Human Resources PPBio
Ecosystem management requires integration of information of many disciplines and scales USERS Politicians Citizens INVENTORY & LOCAL MONITORING REMOTE SENSING ECOSYSTEM PROCESSES
(1) Be standardized. (2) Permitintegrated surveys. (3) Be large enough to permit monitoring of all elements of biodiversity and ecosystem processes. (4) Bemodular, to permit comparisons with less intensive sampling over large areas. (5) Becompatible with existing initiatives. (6) Be implementable with the existing manpower. (7) Make data available quickly and in a usable form to managers and other stakeholders. An efficient system for studying biodiversity must have the following characteristics:
Permanent plots follow contour lines • Soil properties tend to change in accordance with altitude • Therefore, plots following contour lines minimize internal soil variation
20 m: DAP>10 cm 40 m: DAP>30 cm Plots have fixed length but variable width, which is inversely proportional to the abundance of the organisms. platô 4 m: DAP>1 cm baixio

BR 319 REGION An area of great interest – largely unknown and increasingly threatened. PPBio is going to install 10 modules along the sides of the road, which can be integrated with climate and hydrological research.
PPBio Internacional • Information generated in the PPBio RAPELD grids in Brazilian Amazonia will be comparable to data being collected in sites installed and planned in Southern Brazil and Australia(PPBio Australasia), and grids planned in Bolivia, Colombia and Nepal. • The world’s largest tropical forest research program, the Center for Tropical Forest Science (CTFS) of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, has recommended the installation of RAPELD grids around as many of its 50-ha vegetation plots as feasible.
Expanding the grid system to new sites The grid system allows collection of data on tree dynamics (which is necessary to understand carbon balance), gas emissions, hydrology and any other ecosystem process at scales relevant to management. Proposal: • To investigate hydrology in all permanent plots in the PPBio grid system to be installed around the LBA tower in Santarém. Ongoing activities and integration possibilities
Hidrology and Gas emissions The CT Hidro Project # 555484/2006-8 will install piezometers (to monitor the water table and water chemistry) and static chambers (to monitor gas emissions by soil and water) in the 30 PPBio plots at PARNA Viruá and Reserva Ducke. Proposal: • To extend the same kind of monitoring to the other PPBio grids. • To complement soil hydrological monitoring with tensiometers installed in the 30 plots of each PPBio grid system. • We need support for local people to collect this data. Ongoing activities and integration possibilities
Research of ecosystem processes at PPBio grid systems Proposal: • To have LBA towers, and infrastructure to leaf-litter input in all PPBio grid systems already installed. Ongoing activities and integration possibilities
