Sr3NaTaO6 Sr3NaNbO6 Synthesis of New Complex Metal OxidesHans-Conrad zur Loye, University of South Carolina, DMR 0450103 This project focuses on the utilization of molten hydroxides in sealed silver tubes as a means for synthesizing high quality single crystals of complex transition metal oxides. Sealed silver tubes permit the slow release of water from the hydroxide flux which, in turn, aids in the solubility of our reagents and allows us to maintain a highly oxidizing reaction environment. Our recent success utilizing this method has led to the discovery of over 100 new compositions with a variety of new structure types and properties. Highlighted below are the new early transition metal oxides, Sr3NaMO6 (M = Nb, Ta), structurally related to the 2-H family of perovskites. The crystal structure of Sr3NaMO6 (M = Nb, Ta) (left) consists of chains of NaO6 (grey) trigonal prisms face shared to MO6 octahedra (orange) with Sr atoms (green) occupying the spaces in between.
