Shariah compliant Stock Trading • More than 250 Companies listed in the CSE, of which over 20% are Shariah-friendly. • Namal Amana Equity Fund was the best performing Fund of all Islamic Funds tracked by Bloomberg. • Launch of Dow Jones Sri Lanka Islamic Index to track Shariah-friendly stocks in 2006. • Sri Lanka’s first ever Open-Ended Shariah Compliant Mutual Fund launched by Adl Capital in association with Comtrust Asset Management in July 2011.
Islamic Finance industry • IBF industry estimated to exceed USD 2 Billion. • It is estimated that 10% -12% of this potential is currently penetrated. • There are more than 10 financial institutions offering Islamic Finance services, mostly via a “Window” • These IFIs Mainly provide Commercial Banking, Takaful and Leasing products. • Adl Capital Ltd. only company focussing on Investment Banking, licensed by the SEC.
THE FUTURE OF ISLAMIC FINANCE IN SRI LANKA • Further Amendments to Tax and Banking Legislation in order to create a “Level Playing Field” • Open the Mutual Fund Industry to foreign investors • Entry of larger players, both local and overseas, given the potential the industry has to offer. • Sri Lanka could serve as an Islamic Finance hub for South Asia – 3 of the 5 countries with the largest Muslim populations are in the Asian sub-continent, with a combined population of c. 500 million.
