Protection/ Automation upgrade for AMPS/RTDS Brian Johnson and Normann Fischer
Facilities: Analog model power system (AMPS) • 5 kVA system • Scale model power transmission system: V, I, Z • Data acquisition systems • Multiple power sources • Safely mimic network dynamic performance • Secure remote access to run cases remotely
Additional capabilities • Fault initiator • Power electronic based implementation of faults • Variable impedance fault • Commercial Relays • With and without communication • DFIG emulator • Phase shifting transformer with tap changer control
Facilities: Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) Weston Ricks operating the RTDS • Real time power systems transients simulation • Closed loop simulation with external hardware • Donated by POWER Engineers • Protective relay testing • Power converter interactions with measurement and control equipment • Power amplifiers interface and low level interface
Senior Design project Objectives • Upgrade communication and control automation • Implement and demonstrate modern standards ( for example, IEC 61850) • Potential interface between RTDS and AMPS • Design the communication and control scheme • Specify system components • Order components • Design settings for the components • Assemble, test and debug • Several industry based mentors
