    6. Attitude & Philosophy SAR exists for one reason only; to reduce the suffering and pain for the missing or injured subject. No money in SAR and there is rarely acclaim. It’s often tiring, uncomfortable, unnerving, frustrating, smelly, hot, cold, sweaty and rarely happens at convenient times for responders. You must be FOCUSED, DEDICATED, SKILLED, CONFIDENT, and THICK-SKINNED.

    7. Attitude & Philosophy One can experience no greater satisfaction then is received from helping others. SAR is hard work! 4 – 6 hours of actual searching (excluding travel and rest time) is generally considered the average usefulness of a field searcher during an operational period Effective searching requires; an alert mind, able body and acute senses Searchers must be rested, conditioned and nourished.

    8. Search is an Emergency Subject may be injured and require emergency care or protection from themselves or the environment. Time and Weather destroy clues. Faster response time = smaller search area. First operational period often crucial.

    9. Search is a “Classic Mystery”
