CLUSTER AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Production (a) Egg Production • 3 400 POL distributed at week 18 • Average laying percentage = 70% • Average production 2380 eggs per day (14 eggs/day/household) • Average mortality 1.4% • Noted decrease in production in the past week in UMP, mainly due to heat stress

  8. CLUSTER AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Production (cont) (b) Broiler production • 2400 Day old chicks were distributed to 48 farmers in UMP • Mortality 0.75% • Adlib feeding practiced • Expected to start selling from the 8th of Dec

Indigenous chickens • A total of 720 indigenous chickens were distributed in Ward 16, Mutare Rural • Each farmer received 1 cock and 11hen • Chickens being fed to increase the growth rate, increase productivity • Drugs provided for the common diseases in indigenous chickens

  10. CLUSTER AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Production (cont) (d) Piggery • 24 farmers are into piggery. • Each farmer receiving 2 gilts and one boar shared between 2 farmers • Feed supplied enough to take farmers for 6 months • Drugs and implements supplied

CLUSTER AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Mainstreaming HIV and AIDS, Nutrition and Value Addition • Mainstreaming gender HIV and AIDS in all activities • Working with technical experts such as MoH, NAC, Zichire and ZRCS • 13 drama groups have been established • Groups agree on monthly topics to act on during any gatherings (edutainment) • Farmers are contributing resources for the food processing training

Indigenous chickens • Marketing plans have been developed by the farmers • Local markets identified include the Apostle Church in Marange • Farmers shall sell the indigenous chickens collectively • Restaurants specialising in natural food have also been agreed with

CLUSTER AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Sustainability • Community Savings Clubs • 16 savings clubs formed comprising of egg farmers and 4 savings clubs for broilers • Egg farmers contributing $10 weekly for feeds, drugs and animal procurement • Broiler farmers to contribute towards procurement of 100 Day old chicks and one broiler concentrate per farmer in the next cycle

CLUSTER AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Sustainability (Cont) (ii) Commodity Associations • Farmers shall form Commodity Associations • Facilitate constitution making • Training steering committees (iii) Integration into Cropping Programmes • Beneficiaries are engaged in CA, and other cropping projects so as to improve on grain yield, to cater for the small stock

CLUSTER AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Sustainability (Cont) (iv) Market Linkages • linking farmers to different markets • Facilitate signing of contracts between farmers and customers/ buyers • linking farmers to different input suppliers (feed suppliers, DOC and POL suppliers, drug and vaccinations suppliers)

  23. CLUSTER AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Sustainability (Cont) (v) Retaining breeding stock • Pig farmers shall retain 10% of litter as breeding stock • There shall be cross breeding to avoid inbreeding • Indigenous chickens to retain 20% as breeding stock

CLUSTER AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES Lessons learnt • The participation of LPD and Vet (through extension services and training) gives value to the project • Farmers are eager to venture into other enterprises. Some egg farmers have started broiler production • Egg market is being undersupplied especially in UMP and there is room for expansion • Cooperation among the farmers
