  1. Thesis Statement The impact of reason had changes in medicine, religion, and entertainment. In medicine, physicians and surgeons began to experiment more and minimize the use of traditional methods.  In religion, the reformation caused changes in balance of power and changed certain aspects of religious life.  In entertainment blood sports and taverns became the rage with common people.

  4. The step to Modern Medicine"The enlightenment's growing focus on discovering the laws of nature and on human problems did give rise to a great deal of reasearch and experimentation." (667) What caused medicine to change: • Medicine:unchanging before the enlightment. • Ideas of Aristotle • It was medicine "before science" • No "logic" • reason • curiosity • Tools/ Inventions • forceps, thermomiter • led to important discoveries • heart, bactria, disease Old-school dental tool below

  5. The great discovery: Small Pox • Biggest epidemic • Since black plague • 60 million dead •  Action instead of faith • Methods: • Blood letting • smallpox inoculation • studies on infected • Edward Jenner • Created Vaccine • The science of immunology came from this.

Religion • lack of confidence in church • People branched from Catholicisim • Parish Church=religious unit of Europe • Jansenism • Jesuits • Protestant Reformation • Power went to politicians (princes) • New religions. I.E calvinism • Led to new ways of thinking • enlightnment Gave people sense of freedom • Individualism

Religion • Aiethism and Agnotism became wide spread. • Church follweres lacked confidence in church. • Lessened the power of the church. • The church and state combined • 1738 John Wesley founded the Methodist Church. • Methodists part of counter reformation • Enlightenment brought religious tolerance and freedom.

  8. Noah Leisure • Blood sports- cock fighting, bull baiting • Games- wealthy people played cards • Sports- horse racing became a professional sport, modern cricket developed • Theater • Novels  • Tavern

  9. Blood Sports Cock Fighting- razors were attached to trained roosters, and then the roosters were pit against each other Bull-baiting- bulls were staked on chains and were attacked by dogs

  10. Theater By the end of the 18th century, most towns in England had a theater There was a new found interest in Italian Opera and tragic plays

  11. Novels/Books The modern novel came about in the 18th century. However, culture was largely oral rather than written.
