Intention • Clearly define “internationalization” • Active consideration of GRCC’s existing capacity and desired scope for internationalizing the curriculum (i.e., “What can we do and what should we do?”) • Review the concept of curriculum • Align existing resources so that they culminate in a logical internationalization/cultural studies curriculum • Link Study Away with Internationalization
How could students benefit? • Promote empathy for other cultures and values systems • Increase awareness of prevailing world conditions and global trends, human values & choices • Support students in their development of a sense of self and community within the city, state, and region; • Provide opportunities for learning, cultural development and career education;* • Foster understanding and building global partnerships;* • Prepare students to take their place in an increasingly global community and world citizenship.*
What we sought to accomplish • Transition “internationalization of the curriculum” to “cultural competency”or “globalization.” • Support Study Abroad becoming Study Away to more accurately reflect the range of opportunities for students to engage in cultural aspects of the local, regional, national and international world • Authorize a capacity analysis for the development of a cultural competencies department or center, including a foreign student exchange program • Further consider trategies for designating student achievement of cultural studies/globalization/internationalization learning outcomes (e.g., diploma or transcript designation)
Status & Recommendation • Academic Program Review: Recreation of the process, including a consultation from an external expert and new position. • Study Away: Recreation of the process, including a consultation from an external consultant and subsequent reassignment of the work in a pilot program. Recommendations • Recognize that these elements are now embedded into existing work. • Retire the Committee.
