Catalyst 1. What is the equilibrium point? 2. What exactly does equilibrium mean? 3. Can you find a situation in your body where this exists? 4. Grade yourselves in your learning logs for all LT’s End
Today’s Learning Target • 6.8 – I can identify the conjugate acid and base in a chemical reaction. • 6.9 – I can explain what a buffer is, draw a titration curve for a buffered solution, and explain why these are essential to maintaining life in humans.
I. Conjugate Acids and Bases • Conjugate Base– The compound that remains after a Bronsted-Lowry acid has given off its H+. • Conjugate Acid– The compound that is formed when a Bronsted-Lowry base gains a H+. HA + B A- + BH+
Class Example • Identify the acid, base, conjugate acid, and conjugate base: HBr + NaOH H2O + NaBr
Table Talk • Identify the acid, base, conjugate acid, and conjugate base: H2SO4 + KOH KHSO4 + H2O
Stop and Jot • Identify the acid, base, conjugate acid, and conjugate base: HI + NH3 NH4+ + I-
I. Weak Acid and Base Equilibrium • Weak acids and bases do not completely dissociate. • This means that they exist in equilibrium • There are both reactant and products present in a solution of weak acid or base.
Learning Log Assessment • Rate yourself 1 – 4 on LTs 6.8 and 6.9
Which Card? • Raise your table’s card in the air for the category that you think each compound belongs to. • Your choices are: • Bronsted – Lowry Acid • Bronsted – Lowry Base • Arrhenius Acid • Arrhenius Base • Conjugate Acid • Conjugate Base
Which Card? • You run the following reaction: HCOOH + OH- COOH- + H2O 1. What is OH-? 2. What is HCOOH? 3. What is COOH- 4. What is H2O?
Which Card? • You run the following reaction: NH3 + HBr NH4+ + Br- 1. What is NH3? 2. What is HBr? 3. What is NH4+? 4. What is Br-?
Which Card? • You run the following reaction: HF + LiOH LiF + H2O 1. What is LiOH? 2. What is HF? 3. What is LiF? 4. What is H2O?
