Bellwork • What examples can you and your group think of that America has borrowed from other countries cultures?
Japan 7.28 Explain the influence of China and the Korean Peninsula upon Japan as Buddhism, Confucianism, and the Chinese writing system were adopted.
Objectives • Today we will take notes on how China and Korea influenced Japan • So that I can explain how China and Korea influenced Japan’s culture • I will know I have it when I can state what influences China and Korea had on Japan
Early Japanese cultures • Ainu • Probably came from Siberia • Unique group • Began to fight with others for land • They lost • Culture pretty much disappeared
Early Japanese Cultures cont. • People who lived south of Ainu • The people who beat the Ainu • Became known as the Japanese • Lived in small farming villages • Ruled by clans (families)
Yamato • Most powerful clan in Japan • Lived on Honshu, Japan’s largest island • Claimed to be descended from the sun Kami • The most powerful Kami • Took control over much of the island • Started to call themselves the emperor of Japan
Japan gets curious • Japan knew about China and Korea • Didn’t really interact with them much • Yamato leaders thought they could learn from other cultures • They really only knew of two other countries • They sent representatives to China and Korea • They invited people from China and Korea to move to Japan
What did they learn? • Took four things from China and Korea • Language • Philosophy • Religion • Government
Language • Japan did not have a written language • They learned to write from the Chinese • So for about 200 years they spoke Japanese and wrote in Chinese • Even after they learned to write in Japanese Chinese was the official language of the Government
Philosophy • Prince Shotoku (a temporary ruler of Japan) • Really admired Chinese culture • Sent scholars to China • They brought back Confucianism • This became the basis of Japanese society
Religion • Buddhism came from China • Once again spread by Prince Shotoku • Built grand Buddhist temples • Wrote commentaries on Buddhist teachings • His popularity increased Buddhism’s popularity
Government • Shotoku wanted Japan to have a Chinese government system • More powerful emperors • Was actually opposed by clan members • As a result Shotoku only got part of his wish • Emperors gained some power but not as much as he wanted
Silent Think Time • Read Japan Learns from China and Korea on p. 443-445. (HOLT World History Textbook) • Answer the following questions in your notes: • How did rulers of Japan learn about China and Korea? Why did they do this? • Why did many early Japanese learn to write in Chinese? • How did Japanese learn about Confucianism? • What religious changes occurred as a result of Prince Shotoku?
Exit Ticket • List three ways that Korea and China influenced Japan • Be very specific about each.
