HM 14-5 • Measuring Self-Destruction Behavior • Kathryn Kelley and her associates (1985) developed a scale to measure people’s self-destruction behavior. • They viewed self-destructiveness as a tendency to engage in behaviors that increase the likelihood of negative consequences or that decrease the likelihood of positive consequences in the future. • Chronic self-destructiveness, then, involves behavior that will probably be detrimental to one’s health and well-being in the long run.
HM 14-5 • The Chronic Self-Destructiveness Scale (CSDS) appears in HM 14-5. The scale measures an aspect of personality that seems to underlie a variety of behaviors related to the personality disorders. • Indeed, Kelley et al. found the chronic self-destructiveness is positively correlated with academic cheating, traffic violations, adolescent rebelliousness, and treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. • In addition to these indicators of validity, Kelley et al. report acceptable levels of reliability.
HM 14-5 • If you use this scale in class, students should be advised that scores on the CSDS do not predict the occurrence of a personality disorder but show only common patterns of behavior. • The 73 items in HM 14-5 actually make up two 52-item scales, one for each gender. Scoring instructions for each gender follow:
HM 14-5 Women Score A=1, B=2,C=3, D=4, E=5 for items: 5, 8, 11, 15, 18, 19, 22, 31, 33, 37, 39, 40, 43, 44, 45, 46, 53, 63 Score A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1 for items: 1, 2, 6, 7, 9, 10, 12, 16, 17, 20, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28, 29, 30, 32, 36, 38, 41, 47, 49, 54, 56, 58, 60, 61, 62, 64, 66, 67, 69 Men Score A=1, B=2, C=3, D=4, E=5 for items: 4, 14, 18, 21, 22, 39, 40, 45, 48, 53, 57, 59, 63, 65, 72, 73 Score A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1 for items: 2, 3, 10, 12, 13, 17, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 32, 34, 35, 36, 41, 42, 47, 49, 50, 51, 52, 54, 55, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71
HM 14-5 • Both genders should have 52 items, with number recorded in place of a letter. • The score on the CSDS is simply the sum of those numbers. • The following norms are from Kelley et al. (1985): Women Men High Score 157-260 158-260 Intermediate Score 105-156 97-157 Low Score 52-104 52-96
