  4. What is alcohol? Drinking alcohol is also known as ethanol Chemical formula: C2H6O

  5. Different Types of Alcohol • Many different varieties • Beer (4-6% alcohol) • Wine (12 – 15% alcohol) • Liquor (40% alcohol) • Proof = twice (2x) the alcohol content • ex: most liquors are 80 proof (or 40% alcohol)

  7. Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) • Short term effects of alcohol depend on blood alcohol content (BAC), which is the % of alcohol in the blood • BAC depends on several things: • How much you weigh • Your gender • How often you drink • 0.08% = legally intoxicated

Assignment – Letter to a Friend • Get a sheet of paper • After reading the article, write a letter (minimum 10 sentences) to a friend/family member/made-up person with a drinking problem • Your letter must include: • What alcohol is • What is happening to his BAC as he drinks • The long-term effects to his body if he continues binge drinking • You must use evidence from your notes and the article to write your letter • If you don’t finish you have until Friday to turn it in
