Ascent- upward movement. Ex: William Few made a rapid ascent to a leadership position in Georgia. Assent (verb)- “to express agreement.”Ex: The states must assent to the Constitution before it can be enacted. Assent (noun)- an agreement, or concurrence. Ex: The states finally gave their assent to the plan.
Warrant- an authorization, justification, or sanction. Ex: His word is our warrant. Ex: A warrant is needed to spend public funds. Warrant (verb)- “to approve officially; authorize; sanction” or “to provide sufficient grounds for.”Ex: Will the committee warrant the spending of this money? Writ- a legal document ordering the person or persons named in it to do or refrain from doing a specific act. Ex: A writ from the Pope prevented the priest from marrying.
Prohibition- the legal restriction of the manufacture and sale of alcoholic drinks for common consumption. Ex: The Eighteenth Amendment instated prohibition. Bootleg- a verb meaning to make, sell, or transport (liquor or other goods) illegally. Ex: Sometimes thieves bootleg music or movies from the internet. Bootleg- an adjective meaning made, sold, or transported illegally. Ex: In 1921, the old farmer hid his bootleg whiskey under a pile of hay in his barn.
Premier- a prime minister in certain European countries. Ex: The premier of France leads the cabinet in their decision-making. Premier- an adjective meaning “first in position, rank, or authority” or “first in order of time; earliest.” Ex: With his extensive knowledge, the philatelist Mr. Steve was the premier philatelic authority on Icelandic postage stamps. Premiere- the first public showing of a movie, drama, opera, etc. Ex: The premiere of Pilgrim occur on Broadway in the near future.
Repeal- To repeal a law or a tax is to revoke or withdraw it by a formal legislative act. Ex: In 1933, Congress repealed the Eighteenth Amendment and replaced it with the Twenty-first Amendment, which allowed the transport and sale of alcoholic beverages in the U.S. once again. Appeal- a formal request made by a person or institution regarding the correctness of a judgment or ruling. Ex: The Bricker Amendment was a Senator’s appeal to Congress to restrict the decision-making power of the President. Appeal- the procedure by which a legal case is taken to a higher court for the possible reversal of the lower court’s decision.
