  2. circumspect • Careful to look at all possibilities before acting; cautious; aware of consequences

  3. inspect • To look at carefully in search of flaws

  4. introspection • The act of looking into one’s own thoughts and feelings

  5. perspective • One way of looking at things

  6. respect • To look up to someone; to show honor

  7. retrospective • Looking back at past things

  8. spectacle • Something displayed for the public to see

  9. spectacles • Glasses that help someone see better

  10. spectator • A person who watches something, such as a sporting event

  11. speculate • To look at and think about something from different points of view

  12. theme • The lesson you can learn from a story; the moral; the author’s message • Examples: Honesty is the best policy • Never give up on your dreams

  13. flashback • A device used in literature to present action that occurred before the beginning of the story. • Flashbacks are often introduced as the dreams or memories of characters.

  14. foreshadowing • A device used in literature to create expectation of an event or to hint at later developments.

  15. dialogue • Conversation between people in a literary work • Dialogue is used to help us understand a character’s personality, their education level, their mood, etc.

  16. symbolism • When an object represents an idea • In Out of the Dust, apples represent new life and hope.

  17. mood • The atmosphere an author creates in a literary work by choosing the right words to evoke emotions
