What are air fresheners? • Air fresheners are products designed to mask or remove unpleasant indoors odors . • Compounds: ethylene-based • glycol ethers, which are classified • as toxic air contaminants, • and terpenes, which react rapidly • with ozone.
The warning voice: “There are too many products on the shelves that we assume are safe, but have never even been tested,” said Dr. Gina Solomon
Phthalates • Endocrine disruptors. • Are used to bind the fragrance oils together.
Phthalates labeling • Phthalates, is present in most of the products labeled with the word “fragrance”.
Toxic Phthalates found in Air fresheners: • Di-ethyl Phthalate (DEP) • n Di-n-butyl Phthalate (DBP) • n Di-isobutyl Phthalate(DIBP) • n Di-methyl Phthalate (DMP)- “animal studies” • n Di-isohexyl Phthalate(DIHP)
Products that contained the highest levels of phthalates: • Ozium Glycol-ized Air Sanitizer • Walgreens Air Freshener Spray • Walgreens Scented Bouquet Air Freshener • Walgreens Solid Air Freshener
Products that contained a smaller amount of phthalates: • Citrus Magic • Lysol Brand II Disinfectant • Oust Fan Liquid Refills
Products that contained no phthalates: • Febreze Air Effects Air Refresher • Renuzit Subtle Effects
