Strategies for AP-DPO United Every Human has Rights Rajiv Rajan, General Secretary, EKTHA
Rajiv Rajan, General Secretary, EKTHA Background • Very limited number of DPOs in the region • Uneven distribution of DPOs Ex: In India we could see concentration • of DPOs / Federations in the southern region than in the northern part of • the country. • The focus of existing DPOs is not holistic development. • Even DPOs , which are advocacy groups sometime tend to function as • NGOs and focus on rehabilitation. • Lack of leadership is also a main reason for lack of focus on holistic • development Every Human has Rights
Rajiv Rajan, General Secretary, EKTHA Need of the hour • Focus on bottom up Approach • Understanding the community resources, needs and wants • of people with Disabilities at the grass root level. • Awareness and participation of persons with disabilities at • all levels of planning. • Ensuring the voices of persons with disabilities heard at all • levels. Every Human has Rights
Rajiv Rajan, General Secretary, EKTHA Strategies • Initiating projects that train leaders of DPOs across the region • in order to ensure that all of us are on the same platform towards • development. • Common agenda. Example – We could choose working on key • articles of UNCRPD like Article 12, 13, 19, 29 etc, • Ensure sharing of expertise within the region towards the • common agenda in building the capacity of the national DPOs. Every Human has Rights
