  1. The Water Cycle

  2. Hydrosphere • 97% of the Earth’s water is Salt Water • 2.55% of the Earth’s water is frozen in Ice Caps and Glaciers • That leaves only 0.45% of fresh water available for all life on Earth

  3. Why don’t we run out? • Water is constantly being renewed and reused through the Hydrologic cycle. Or • The Water Cycle.

  4. Stage 1 of Water Cycle… • Water can return to the air by evaporation from bodies of water or transpiration from plants. • Evaporation and Transpiration are usually referred to as Evapotranspiration.

  5. As the water vapor floats up in the atmosphere it will eventually turn back into water droplets • Water vapor => liquid water is condensation • Condensation in the air forms clouds.

  6. As the water drops or ice crystals get too large they fall back to Earth. • Precipitation

  7. As the precipitation falls back to Earth it do 1 of the following 4: • Runoff (flood) • Infiltrate (get absorbed into the ground) • Be stored as Ice or Snow • Be stored in reservoirs (natural and man-made)

  8. Runoff • Rain that hits the surface and can not go into the ground will flow over the surface into streams, lakes, etc.

  9. Infiltrate • Water that soaks into the soil and becomes part of the ground water system is said to infiltrate. • Infiltration depends on soil type, steepness of slope, and vegetation.

  10. Ground Water • This water can be: -Pumped to the surface -Stored in the ground -Reach the surface through exposed rock called springs

  12. Storage as Ice or Snow • Water that precipitates as snow in cold areas will remain frozen until it is warmed.

  13. Storage in Reservoirs • Some runoff will be captured in Lakes or reservoirs and can be used on demand.
