What Makes An Engineer? Exploring Career Decisions with an Intro. To Engineering
Engineers: • solve problems using Math, Science, and Technology • design products that are useful
Becoming an Engineer: • Required: • degree in Engineering, with a major focus on math, science & technology • most likely specialize in a specific branch of engineering (specialization)
Characteristics of an Engineer • Problem solver • Ability to work with others • Communicate well • Able to write technical reports • organized
Engineering Skills: Engineers are usually hired because of particular skills, not a specific engineering degree. Businesses usually look for a person with a degreeand with specific skills/experience. Experience is a VERY important qualification for most jobs: school internships, part-time employment, volunteer work
Engineering Technology Degrees • Examples • Aerospace Engineering • Bioengineering • Chemical Engineering • Civil & Environmental Engineering • Computer Engineering • Electrical Engineering • Electronics Engineering Technology • Industrial Engineering JUST TO NAME A FEW!
Accreditation: All Engineering programs are accredited by an organization outside of the university. -It’s just like a “stamp of approval”, that it meets standards for a quality process, adequate resources and appropriate curriculum. Example: ABET
How Can You Prepare? • High school , get a strong foundation in math & science • College, study chemistry, physics, biology, higher math courses (calculus) • The more you do in high school, the more prepared (and ahead!) you will be in these areas in college!
Similar Areas Having a Bachelors degree in Engineering also provides a strong foundation for an advanced degree in law, business, or even medicine!
Engineering Licensure Many choose to become licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE). It is not required for many of the engineering careers though. However, only licensed professionals are allowed to offer their services to the public and sign & seal plans for the public. A PE certification sets a person apart from other non-licensed engineers!
Engineering Design Process Overview 1. State the Problem 2. Generate Ideas 3. Select a Solution 4. Build the Item 5. Evaluate 6. Present Results It is a never-ending process: you can always refine the design!
