Doctrine and Covenants 19. Printing.
E N D
Printing In June 1829, Joseph Smith hired the printer Egbert B. Grandin to print 5,000 copies of the Book of Mormon at a cost of $3,000. Using his farm as collateral, Martin Harris personally guaranteed to pay the cost of printing if sales of the book did not cover the cost. An 1843 portrait of Egbert B. Grandin. He was twenty-two when he published the Book of Mormon.
Boycott Sales Before the publication was complete, some townspeople held a meeting and passed a resolution not to purchase the Book of Mormon. Concerned about these threats, Grandin stopped printing to avoid not being paid for the work.
Marin Harris When Martin Harris learned of the planned boycott, being aware he would lose his farm if the book didn't sell, he went to Joseph in Manchester, New York, and demanded a revelation from the Lord. "He Came to us and . . . says, 'The Books will not sell for no Body wants them.' Joseph says, 'I think they will sell well.' Says he, 'I want a Commandment [a revelation].' 'Why,' says Joseph. Says he, 'I must have a Commandment!' Joseph put him off. But he insisted three or four times he must have a Commandment. . . . "In the morning he got up and said he must have a Commandment to Joseph and went home. And along in the after part of the Day Joseph and Oliver Received a Commandment (D&C 19)"
