  2. CONTENTS • Explore the power of using D2L as an advising tool • Share insights about bulk enrolling students in a major • Create a repository of information Aim is to encourage teachers to think about other possible ways to use D2L to enhance the student experience

  3. IMPORTANCE • Primary purpose of advising is to encourage students to work together with instructors and plan their educational course sequence for upcoming semesters • This is also a good time to identify any potential barriers or problems that need to be solved • These conversations are crucial to student success

  4. CONTENTS • Students may also schedule a personal advising meeting with any faculty during regular office hours by calling or by sending an e-mail request for an appointment Faculty would also like to present some helpful online advising tools to help students graduate as soon as possible

STEPS • Information for students with a declared major is always accessibleonline through the D2L • Login to D2L with StarID and look under CONTINUOUS - then see "Student Advising" • There students will find lots of important, updated information under CONTENT and various links to help plan their educational journey

OTHER • Information for students with a declared major is always accessible24x7 through the D2L • Communications can be easily sent to students • Graduation, Internships, etc. • Not purged through MnSCU since it is not tied to a term • Login to D2L and look under CONTINUOUS - then see "Student Advising“ • HTC uses CONTINUOUS for committees and councils

  7. SAMPLES We will show samples for teachers to shorten their learning curve The demonstration and discussion encompasses tips for easily bulk enrolling students into a D2L course site

  8. INSTRUCTIONS TO BULK ENROLL • Request report from Institutional Research using ISRS data: • Currently registered students in ______ with declared majors of ______ • Report comes in Excel. • Then remove all columns that are not needed and leave just StarID and TechID

INSTRUCTIONS-continued 1 • Add 1st column of ENROLL • 2nd column is StarID • 3rd column is TechId • 4th column is student (role to enroll) • 5th column is name of site in D2L (CCIS Student Advising) • Make Row 1 - a heading with column titles (field names) • Select Insert table (OK in box – all data rows and columns should be selected automatically) • File Save As .csv (saves 5 fields with commas)

  10. INSTRUCTIONS-continued 2 STATUS,StarID,TECHID,ROLE,COURSE (header columns) ENROLL,zs1204fr,00206247,student,CCIS Student Advising (example of row 2) Open .csv in notepad and take out the first line (header) and remove any commas at the end. Change the .csv to .txt

  11. INSTRUCTIONS-continued 3 • Send .txt file to CSA to import as txt file into site in D2L • Go to Admin tools • Go to users • In users choose Bulk User Management • Choose the TXT file. • Upload, Next, check for errors.
