  5. Key Words from the Criteria • Potential • “capable of being or becoming” • What could the work have been? • Think about the opportunities in the work • What was the brief? • What would the process and product have been like to create the perfect preparation and performance?

Key Words from the Criteria • Artistic • “showing skill or excellence in execution, workmanship or exhibiting taste, discriminating judgment, or sensitivity” • What was the performance like for the audience? • Was there anything that could have been improved? How? Why? • What type/style/genre of performance was it? • Was it a successful piece? Why?

  7. Key Words from the Criteria • Vocational • “Instruction or guidance in a profession chosen as a career” • What did you learn on the project? How? Why? • How will what you have learnt help you in a career in the arts? Why? • What skills have you gained/developed? How? Why?

Key Words from the Criteria • Professional • “Appropriate to a profession” • Think about how the project might have been if it were a professional company/event. • How was the project similar to a professional event in the process and performance? Why? • How was the project not like a professional event? Why? • What effect did this have? Why

  10. Key Words from the Criteria • Justified • For every point you make you should… • Give an example • Say why things happened in the way they did • Say how things could have been different • Consider how it might have been if everything you have suggested as an improvement had happened

  11. Description &/or Evaluation • Give enough detail so that someone who has no knowledge of the project can understand your point, however… • Keep description to a minimum • Follow every description with an evaluative comment • Ask yourself why

  12. Example One “As a group we were set a task to create a show based on the idea of cultural identity. We had six weeks to put the project together and had to perform for an audience who were from a mixture of cultures. I thought this was a great idea for a project and was something that would be really exciting. I began by working in a group to discuss what we thought culture was and how people think about it. This was useful as it gave us a starting point.”

Example One • Is entirely descriptive • There is no sense of artistic, vocational or professional • There are no strengths and weaknesses • There is no justification for comments • This might be ok as an introduction but even in an introduction you can give more of a sense of how and why things were done and the effect that this had

  14. Example Two “As a group we were set a task to create a show based on the idea of cultural identity, this was to help us develop the skills needed to devise a performance. We had six weeks to put the project together and had to perform for an audience who were from a mixture of cultures, this reflects what happens in a professional company where shows are put together quickly. I thought this was a great idea for a project and was something that would be really exciting because it would help me develop my skills. I began by working in a group to discuss what we thought culture was and how people think about it. This was useful as it gave us a starting point and helped us consider the potential audience reaction.”

Example Two • Is very descriptive • There is some sense of artistic, vocational or professional but this is only stated and not evaluated • There are no strengths and weaknesses • There is little justification for comments • This might be ok as an introduction but even in an introduction you can give more of a sense of how and why things were done and the effect that this had

  16. Example Three “As a group we were set a task to create a show based on the idea of cultural identity. We were to have six weeks to develop the performance and then we would perform to a mixed audience. The timeline for the production was similar to some professional companies as they are often required to develop a production in a short space of time due to budgets etc. I felt it would be a challenge for the group as we were a new team and some people had never devised before. At some points it was really useful to go over devising techniques as this helped me clarify what I knew already and meant I was able to improve my skills in this area. A strength of mine was my willingness to develop my skills for example when I took part in developing the first devised scene…”

Example Two • Is less descriptive • There is a sense of artistic, vocational or professional and some evaluation • There is a sense of strengths and weaknesses • There is some justification for comments • This is fine as an introduction but you can still give more of a sense of how and why things were done and the effect that this had

What to do now? • You will all submit an evaluation about the induction project • You must focus on meeting the criteria and covering all three areas (artistic, vocational and professional) as well as identifying strengths and weaknesses, then sit back, relax and wait for the grades to roll in • If you feel you need to improve your evaluation after it has been graded you can access help • Late work will NOT be marked until the end of the year

  20. Quick Points to Remember • Ask how and why • Don’t waffle • Minimal description • You must hit artistic, vocational and professional • You must discuss strengths and weaknesses • You are evaluating yourself, the group, the project and performance • You must justify your comments
