QUESTION • Does the egg color affect the number of chicks that hatch?
RESEARCH • THE EGG COLOR WILL NOT AFFECT THE QUALITY OF THE CHICK. • THE OUTER COVERING OF THE EGG IS MADE UP OF CALCIUM CARBONATE. • THE CHICK MAY BE WHITE OR BROWN DEPENDING ON THE BREED OF THE CHICKEN. • THERE ARE TWO MEMBRAINS AROUND THE ALBUMEN. • IT TAKES 21 DAYS FOR THE CHICK’S LIFE CYCLE. • THE CHICK HAS AN EGG TOOTH TO BREAK THROUGH ITS SHELL.
HYPOTHESIS • IF THE EGGSHELL COLOR IS CHANGED, THEN THE BROWN COLORED EGGS WILL PRODUCE MORE CHICKS.
MATERIALS • INCUBATOR • 3 GROUPS OF 18 EGGS • WATER • THERMOMETER
PROCEDURE • PUT THE 54 EGGS IN GROUPS OF 18 EGGS IN AN INCUBATOR. • TAKE THE EGGS AND MARK THEM WITH X’S AND O’S TO TRACK THAT THE EGGS ARE TURNING. • TAKE CARE OF THE EGGS FOR 18 DAYS BY; FILLING UP THE WATER , MAKING SURE THE THEREMOMETER IS AT 100° FARENHEITAND TURNING THE EGGS EVERY HOUR OF THE DAY SO ALL THE EGGS WILL GET WARM. • WHEN DAY 21 ARRIVES THE BABY CHICKS SHOULD MAKE A HOLE IN THE EGG. • OBSERVE THE COLOR OF THE EGGS AND CHICKS. • REALIZE THAT CHICKS COULD ARRIVE AFTER DAY 21.
INDEPENDENT VARABLE • EGG COLOR
DEPENDENT VARABLE • NUMBER OF CHICKS THAT HATCH.
CONTROL VARABLE • TEMPERATURE • INCUBATOR • THE LIQUID • TURNING THE INCUBATORS EACH HOUR
CONCLUSION • THE HYPOTHESIS WAS NOT SUPPORTED. LIGHT BROWN EGGS HATCHED THE MOST CHICKS INSTEAD OF DARK BROWN EGGS. • The results did support my research that eggshell color really should not matter.
