  2. Leslie Derrett was born in 1895, the youngest son of George and Sarah Derrett. He went to Papanui Public School.

  3. His grandad owned the General Store on the Main North Road. Next door was the butchery.

  4. He was in the Merivale Rugby team.

  5. He joined the army in 1916. He was in the infantry- (soldiers who fight on foot.)

  6. Hewasonly22yearsold whenhediedon14thOctober1917fromgunshotsandwoundsinBelgium.

  7. He is buried in the military cemetery in Belgium with a lot of other soldiers.

  8. We will remember him.
