Early Life • born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1948 • mix of Laguna Pueblo, Mexican, and White ancestry • grew up west of Central New Mexico • attended a Catholic school in Albuquerque • received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of New Mexico. • taught creative writing and oral tradition for the English department at the University.
Important aspects of life • Struggled with being a mixed blood • was awarded with the National Endowment for the Humanities Discovery Grant while in college
Native American Heritage • The Spaniards founded a mission in Old Laguna, New Mexico early in the 18th century, but old Laguna had been formed centuries earlier by cattle-keeping Pueblos, successfully repelling raids by the Navajos and the Apaches.
Storytelling • is the conveying of events in words, images, and sounds often by improvisationor embellishment.
Why is storytelling important? • Native American storytelling is an important part of their lives because they tell stories to keep their customs alive. People, weavings, paintings, dances, and carvings all tell stories.
