  1. Trade With Africa INTRODUCTION • During the 1600-1900’s, the British Empire was created. Due to the products Britain was trading at first, the British Empire really got triggered to their power during the 19th and 20th century. • In the 1800’s, Britain traded thousands of goods with many countries all over the world. • The British not only traded products such as spices, but with Africa, traded slaves.Which was known as the African slave trade. This is the start of our project…

  2. The Slave Trade The picture below shows how slaves were stored inside ships They were packed tightly in so more could be transported at one time Because of this many slaves died on the journey

  4. Abolition of the Slave Trade The Slave Trade act was abolished on the 25th March 1807. Joseph Cinquez led the Slave-Revolt. Any British captain who was caught with slaves on his ship was fined £100 per slave. Because of this the captains would throw slaves overboard.

  5. African Culture Music • Ignatius Sancho (1729-80) composed music, appeared on the stage, and entertained many famous figures of literary and artistic London. • Over the last century African cultural music has influenced Western music to a higher degree.

  6. African Culture Literature • Olaudah Equianu also known as Gustavas Vassa experienced an early life of slavery in America. • He wrote about his experiences. • This is a quote from Gustavas Vassa about the African culture “We are almost a nation of dancers, musicians, and poets. Thus every great event, such as a triumphant return from battle, or other cause of public rejoicing is celebrated in public dances, which are accompanied with songs and music suited to the occasion.”

SUMMARY • Was the British Empire good or bad? • The British Empire caused brutal harm to the Africans by driving them to slavery. • Although this was the start of Western culture expanding in Europe. Through out Europe we gained literature skills, had a new culture presented to us as well as a new style of music. • But this still was a racist act because there was only Africans being traded. It was selfish and was against human rights. • The British Empire was and is the reason for how Britain is today.
