Standard vs fungal blood culture comparison in detection of fungemia • At WVU most fungi can be detected two ways: • 1.) Standard blood cultures incubated for up to 5 days; • 2.) Fungal blood cultures incubated for up to 5 days, then sub-cultured (whether positive or negative) to solid media and incubated for up to 14 days with weekly monitoring for growth. • Hypothesis: majority of fungi are isolated within 5 days. • Computer generated data of fungal isolates from all cultures processed between 2008-2010. Retrospective review of electronic medical records. • Data analysis of cultures that isolated fungi. • Date/time of collection and detection. • Site of collection. • Species identification. • Estimated cost.
Results Majority of fungi are isolated within 5 days and there is not a significant improvement in detection of fungemiautilizing 14 day subculture protocol.
