  1. JOEL GIVES A GREAT VISION but interpreting it is challenging. For example Joel 3:18 is figurative, literal and both? Joel 3:18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the mountains shall drop down new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk,(figurative) and all the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall come forth of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley of Shittim.(literal – Eze.47:1)

  2. Ezekiel 47:1 Afterward he brought me again unto the door of the house; and, behold, waters issued out from under the threshold of the house eastward: for the forefront of the house stood toward the east, and the waters came down from under from the right side of the house, at the south side of the altar. [8] Then said he unto me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed.

  3. Bible prophecy gives warning! • Bible prophecy builds faith. • Bible prophecy gives motivation. • Bible prophecy gives vision. Why study this prophet of gloom and glory?

  4. WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE VISION OF WHAT IS COMING? 2 Tim. 3:1-5 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. [2] For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, [4] Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; [5] Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no vision, the people perish: …” Joel’s vision gives us motivation to resists our world for 2 Tim. 3 says:

  5. JOEL GIVES VISION!Joel 1 –Gloom– Day of LORD on JudahJoel 1 – Doom -- Invasions of Babylon Joel 2 – Gloom – Day of LORD on Israel Joel 2 – Doom -- Invasion led by Russia Joel 2 – Glory-- Former & Latter rainJoel 2 –Glory -- Spirit gifts pour out Joel 3 – Doom – Day of LORD on world Joel 3 –Glory-- Hills flow with milk

  6. Understanding PROPHECY keeps us awake! i.e. Why were Jesus disciples so sleepy at just the wrong time? • Mat. 26:36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder. • [38] Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. [40]And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter, What, could ye not watch with me one hour? • Because they didn’t understand their O.T. prophets who said Jesus would be crucified. • Psalm 22:16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. [17] I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.

  7. From:December 1991 Christadelphian Magazine.Article:"THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME"by: Fred Pearce. "There is no intention to be dogmatic about this, --- though it may appear so -- one has to be reasonable firm in stating the case, otherwise no impact is made. But the opposite, that we do not and cannot know anything definite, is equally unacceptable. The Scriptures do make certain positive statements and we should be prepared to accept them as valid."

  8. This is important to understanding what thepalmerworm, locust, cankerworm, caterpillarare about which is all important to appreciating this amazing book. • How does this help? • Joel 1:14 Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the Lord your God, and cry unto the Lord, • Many Jewish writers put Joel in the time of Elisha when there was seven years of famine in the reign of Jehoram son of Ahab, 2Kings 8:1.This adds to seeing the significant of palmerworm, locust, cankerworm and caterpillar. WRITTEN BEFORE 600 BC WHEN GOD’S HOUSE WAS DESTROYED.

  9. FOUR GENERATIONS – HELPS TELL US WHEN JOEL WAS WRITTEN? • Joel 1:2 Hear this (devastation of the nation),ye old men(Ezra 3:12), and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers? [3] Tell yeyour childrenof it, (v.1 = devastation of the temple) and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation. • Matthew 1:11 AndJosiasbegat Jechoniasand his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon: 12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel; • Joel written in Josiah” reign. The “old men” in Ezra 3:12 remembered the words of Joel and wept having seen the old temple.

  10. CHRONOLOGICAL BACKGROUND(Four generations) B.C. 639 Josiah reigns till 609 B.C. Joel written in the reign of Josiah. B.C. 606 1ST Invasion by Nebuchadnezzar. 11. WHAT INSIGHT TO JOEL’S PROPHECY IS SEEN IN THE HEBREW NAMES OF “JOEL” & “PETHUEL”? • Joel 1:1 “The word of the Lord that came to Joel the son of Pethuel.” • Joel is a compound of two Hebrew words: “Yahweh” & “El”. • Pethuel is a compound of “pathah” and “El”. “Pethah” means to spread out, to open. • Joel and Pethuel together show that this prophecy of “Yahweh El” is “spread out" over time.

  12. Joel 1:4 That which the palmerworm hath left hath thelocust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath thecaterpillareaten. (KJV What translation is this? Hint LXX LXX = Caterpillar, locust, palmerworm, cankerworm KJV = Palmerworm, locust, cankerworm, caterpillar

  13. SO WHAT IS BEING SHOWN IN “PALMERWORM”, “LOCUST”, “CANKERWORM” AND “CATERPILLER” EVEN THOUGH THEIR TRANSLATION IS IN QUESTION? Joel 1:4 That which the palmerworm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpiller eaten. HINT ANSWER – NOTHING LEFT!

  14. THE LOPPER, DEVOURER THE MULTIPLIER • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN NKJV? • Joel 1:4 What thechewinglocust left, the swarminglocusthas eaten; What the swarminglocust left, the crawlinglocusthas eaten; And what the crawling locust left, the consuming locust has eaten. (NKJV) • Joel 1:4 That which the palmerworm (gazam) hath left hath the locust(arbelim)eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm(yelek)eaten; and that which the cankerwormhath left hath the caterpiller (chesil) eaten. (KJV) • ANSWER: 4 STAGES OF LOCUST THE LICKER THE FINISHER

  15. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A LOCUST AND A GRASSHOPPER? In 1921 Sir Boris Uvarov discovered that the familiar green grasshoppers of the African bush are really locust in disguised. He observed that when thousands of eggs hatch at one time, the young grasshoppers would constantly touch one another, which would trigger a change both in color and behavior.

  16. HOW DO WE KNOW THESE INSECTS ARE SYMBOLIC? • Joel 1:4 That which the palmerworm (devourer) hath left hath the locust (multiplier) eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm (licker) eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpiller (finisher) eaten. • From context: Joel 1:6 For a nationis come up upon my land, strong, and without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion. • From history – 4 invasion which correspond to four invasions by Babylon. 697 'arbeh {ar-beh'} AV - locust 20, grasshopper 4

  17. THE BABYLONIANS ARE THE INVADERS • 2 Kings 24 & 25 detail four separate invasions: PALMERWORM (Lopper),LOCUST (multiplier),CANKERWORM(licker), CATERPILLER (finisher). • (Invasion #1) 2 Kings 24:1 “In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant.” This event was the “palmerworm” or “lopper” when the head of Judah was placed in subjection.(609 BC) • (Invasion #2)2 Kings 24:2 “And the Lord sent against him bands of the Chaldees, and bands of the Syrians, and bands of the Moabites, and bands of the children of Ammon, and sent them against Judah to destroy it, …” These raiders describe the “locust” or “multiplier” which are multiplied by the nations around Israel.(600 BC)

  18. THE BABYLONIANS ARE THE INVADERS, JOEL 1:4 (Invasion #3) 2Ki.24:10-17 “At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged.” The result of this was the sacking of the temple, the city, and the cream of the population was deported. The city was licked clean by the “cankerworm” or “licker”. (600BC) (Invasion #4) 2Ki.25:1-28 “And it came to pass … that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his host, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; 4 And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled.” This was the final siege of Jerusalem and Judah, where the “caterpiller” or “finisher” finished it.(589 BC)

  19. What other language is commonly used where the letters stand for numbers?

  20. HOW DO WE KNOW V.4 HAS APPLICATION BEYOND BABYLON? Numerical V Value HISTORY Israel subject to Babylon from Nebuchadnezzar to Cyrus 589-539 B.C. Persia ruled from B.C. 538-330 until Alexander. The Greeks ruled Israel from 330-190 B.C. when the Jews rebelled under the Maccabees. Rome ruled from 38 B.C. to A.D. 70 when Israel carried away. 50 208 140 108 How does this build faith?

  21. What is the title of my book on Joel?

  22. “All around us locusts struggled for room on the plants; they pushed, kicked and shoved each other, semaphoring furiously with excited antennae. They ravaged the ears on top. They tugged at the leaves. They gnawed at the stems with such frenzy that we could hear the faint sound of thousands of tiny jaws grinding and chewing, as if someone were scraping a carrot.”

  23. Besides a fitting description of an army GOD USING THE LOCUST GRAPHICALLY SHOWS US HIS FEELINGS. • Joel 1:7 He hath laidmy vine waste, and barkedmyfig tree: he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white. • Jeremiah 4:19 My bowels, mybowels! I am pained atmyvery heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold mypeace, because thou hast heard, O mysoul, the sound of the trump, the alarm of war. 20 Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: …

  24. HOW SHOULD ISRAEL HAVE REACTED TO THAT PROPHESIED? Joel 1:8 Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth. [9] The meat offering and the drink offering is cut off from the house of the Lord; the priests, the Lord's ministers, mourn. [10] The field is wasted, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted: the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth. [11] Be ye ashamed, O ye husbandmen (leaders); howl, O ye vinedressers (people), for the wheat and for the barley; because the harvest of the field is perished. [12] The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men. How are WE to react? Hymn 134 – Habakkuk 3:17 “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: 18 Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”

  25. WHAT WERE THEY EXHORTED TO DO? • WHY DIDN’T IT WORK? • Joel 1:13-14 Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God. [14] Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the Lord your God, and cry unto the Lord, • Joel 2:13-14 And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. [14] Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the Lord your God? • HOW SHOULD WE REACT FOR GOD’S PROPHETS WARN US? • Hab. 3:17,18 “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord” [because our faith is strong] “in the God of my salvation”. [HYMN 134]

  26. WHAT “DAY OF THE LORD” are verses 1:15; 2:1; 3:14? • 589 BC,Joel 1:15 Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come. • 20?? (Context: on Egypt by Nebuchadnezzar) • Isaiah 2:12 For the day of the LORD of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, …” (Future context)

  28. DO WE REALLY DESIRE JESUS’ RETURN? • Matthew 6:24 No man can serve two masters: (i.e. 2Cor. 6:14) for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. • Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world:but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Exhortation to us – do WE desire THE DAY OF THE LORD? Amos 5:18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light.

  29. HOW TO BE DELIVERED FROM“THE DAY OF THE LORD”. • Psalm 119:97 O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. 98 Thou through thy commandments hast made me wiser than mine enemies: for they are ever with me. • 103 How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! “RENEWING OF YOUR MIND”

  30. How to be delivered from the“day of the LORD”to come. • Mat. 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (IS THIS PICTURE A PICTURE OF OUR HOME?)

  31. WILL WE BE DELIVERED FROMTHE DAY OF THE LORD? • Luke 21:36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. • John 6:21 Then they willingly received him into the ship: and immediately the ship was at the land whither they went. • Genesis7:10 And it came to pass after seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.
