Are local churches to meet as small groups in homes? • LaGard Smith says YES! • The Scriptures say NO! • LaGard Smith’s evidence is highly conjectural (Romans 16:3-5; Acts 20:20; 12:12) • The Biblical evidence is that churches in cities like Ephesus DID NOT meet as small groups in homes (Romans 16:16; Acts 20:4-8; 17-28; 19:9)
Are local churches to meet as small groups in homes? Important Facts about the meeting places of other New Testament churches: • The temple was used as the meeting place for the church in Jerusalem (Acts 2:46; 5:12) • The disciples in Troas met in a three story building with “many lights” (Acts 20:4-9) • The church in Corinth all met together in one place (Acts 18:7; 1 Corinthians 14:23) • There were several households in the church (Acts 18:8; 1 Corinthians 1:11, 16) • There was a difference between what was to be done in church and what was to be done in ones own house (1 Corinthians 14:35; 11:34)
Is the Worship of the Church to be Informal? LaGard Smith says YES! The Scriptures say NO! • 1 Corinthians 14:26 does not indicate that “everyone” took a speaking or leading role in the worship of the church. • Limitations are given in the context (14:27-28) • Women were not to speak (14:34-35)
Is the Worship of the Church to be Informal? • The informal & spontaneous worship in Corinth was the very thing Paul condemned and corrected by divine order (1 Corinthians 14:33, 40). All things were to be done decently and in order! • “Decently” is translated from εὐσχημόνως (euschēmonōs). It means “in a seemly manner” (Thayer) or “decorously” (Strong) • “Order” is from τάξις (taxis) which is “an arranging, arrangement…a fixed succession observing a fixed time…due or right order, orderly condition” (Thayer)
The House Church: A Trojan House The real impact of the house church movement is that it separates those who are unlearned & easily impressionable from the wisdom, oversight, guidance and Bible knowledge found in established local churches.
