Rise of the Nazi Party • In the 1930s the Nazi party embodied the resentment of the Treaty of Versailles and the economic hardship that followed • Weimar Republic was a weak coalition government • Nazi party offered strong leadership and a national rebirth • 1930 Nazi’s won 107 seats in the Reichstag • Jan. 1933 Hitler is appointed chancellor • Used this position to consolidate power and destroy the Weimar Republic • Through 1933 Hitler led the Nazis in the destruction of political parties, civil liberties, and democracy

Violating the Treaty of Versailles Hitler began to rearm Germany in 1935 1936 he ordered the remilitarization of the Rhineland 1936-1939 Provided military aid to Fascists in Spanish Civil War March 1938 German troops marched into Austria September 1938 Hitler demanded the Sudetenland be ceded to Germany March 1939 Germany seized the remainder of Czechoslovakia Sept 1939 Germany invaded Poland

Appeasement The policy of making concessions to the dictatorial powers in order to avoid conflict Led by Neville Chamberlain France and Britain were not ready for war militarily, economically, or emotionally Under this policy the League of Nations sanctioned Germany and Japan, but did not use military force to stop actions violating peace agreements
