General Description A four-semester program linking Child Development and ESL coursework that transitions students from full Spanish to full English instruction. Program is designed to incorporate the 12 units of core Child Development courses with 5 units of ESL courses for a 17 unit Certificate.
Program History • The initial idea for this program come to SWC directly from the South Bay Community, which wanted qualified and trained Spanish-speaking day care providers (1998) • Discipline faculty meet with ESL Department Chair to discuss supportive ESL Class, which led to the development of a series of courses. (2001) • ESL faculty sat in CD classes to see what language needs the CD students would have; ended up taking all 4 courses and thus created the materials for the ESL courses based on the observed needs. • First cohort began in 2003.
Career Options The Certificate of Achievement is designed to prepare students to work with young children as: • preschool teacher assistants • childcare providers Offering curriculum, positive guidance, and age-appropriate learning environments.
Course Sequence Policy • First Semester CD 170 Principles of Child Development (90% Spanish) ESL 27A ESL for Principles of CD (100% English) CD 180 Observation & Guidance (70% Spanish) ESL 27B ESL for Observation & Guidance (100% English) CD 181 Curriculum Planning (70% English) ESL 27C ESL for Curriculum Planning (100% English) CD 284 Child, Family, & Community (100% English) ESL 27D ESL for Child, Family & Community (100% English) • Second Semester • Third Semester • Fourth Semester • Total: 17 units ( all CD are transfer courses to CSU; • and the CD170 to UC also)
Admission Requirements • The English as a Second Language assessment test is highly recommended for all students interested in enrolling in this program. • Not open to students who have earned Credit in regular Child Developmentcourses(taught in English) • Not open to students who have successfully taken ESL 40, 41, or 104 or Reading 56.
Assessment • Combined English Language Skills Assessment (CELSA) measures students’ grammatical ability and understanding of meaning in context. (ESL level) • QuickWriting Task – one minute writing activity to know their writing in English competency - first day ESL class • Observation of students that are able to register in other regular CD courses and /or ESL courses while they pursue the Span2Engl Program certificate.
Contextualized Teaching and Learning as a foundation • Contextualized teaching and learning helps teachers relate subject matter content to real world situations
Learning community as a methodology in CTL • Linked courses/ Learning Communities. Span2Engl is a cohort of students taking eight courses that are linked in content in a two-year period of time. While each course retains it own objectives, the content of each course complements and supports the others scaffolding skills and knowledge.
