Overview • This presentation will discuss the unique aspects of traffic management at minesites, using examples from my personal experience. • The presentation will discuss: • Issues associated with minesite traffic operations and safety • Potential consequences • Infrastructure solutions • Policy solutions • Why use traffic professionals? • Note that operations at mine sites is governed by the Mines Safety and Inspection Regulations Act 1995 (MSIR), and the Mine Safety and Inspection Act 1994 (MSIA)
What is a minesite like? Open pit • Big! • Lots of different vehicles • Generally steep (5-7%) • Loud • ‘Theoretically’ dangerous • But generally a familiar traffic environment
What is a minesite like? Underground • A long, straight one-way road • With two way traffic • Lots of different vehicles • Lots of different priorities • Almost always steep (5-7%) • Loud • Slow, and Fast • More than ‘Theoretically’ dangerous • A completely alien traffic environment
Improve Intersections • Signage • Delineation • Geometry • Condition • Windrows • Speed Controls • Clear Zones • Lighting
Policy Measures • No-Go Areas • Vehicle Hierarchy • Protocols • Communication • Training • Start-up Procedures • Emergency Procedures
