Who was “Kidd the Pirate”? • Pirate born in Scotland in 1645 • Pursued French and eventually pirate ships who interfered with British and American trade • In time, however, he became a pirate himself • In 1699, he returned to New York, hoping to be pardoned • En route, he buried or gave away large amounts of treasure. • Was arrested and returned to Boston where he was hanged for murder and piracy in 1701. • Rumors concerning the buried treasure of Captain Kidd have persisted for over 300 years!
