  2. What is the CDL Program? • Created in 1974 • Goal:“to promote and maintain a recognition that will assist dental laboratories in their continuing efforts to improve the quality and efficiency of the dental team's service to the public." • Current CDLs: 342

  3. Why Mess with a Good Thing? • 2005 – NBC Board creates CDL Modernization Committee “…to review the existing program and recommend conceptual changes to make the CDL more relevant to the needs of the industry.”

  4. What does “more relevant”mean? • Program must be current and flexible to meet evolving industry needs • Value to participating laboratories and their clients must increase through marketing and recognition • Standards must include a broader range of subjects to be more applicable in the business world

  5. Making the CDL Program Current • Requirements must change as industry evolves • Labeling requirements • Record-keeping of product use • Written policies for re-work • Periodic review to ensure on-going compliance • Five year Revalidation

  6. Making the CDL Program Flexible • Written policy requirements are flexible • Specifics are up to laboratory discretion • Policy must be in place • Policies can be altered by CDL as needed • Periodic review allows mechanism to verify any new standards that may become necessary

  7. Making the CDL Program More Valuable • More relevant since requirements will evolve and on-going compliance is ensured • Independent Review ensures impartiality • Portion of fee revenue specifically directed towards marketing to dentists • Over 40% of 2007 CDL budget

  11. How to Become a CDL • Get a CDL Handbook and Application • From NBC via website or phone • At NADL component meetings • Submit application, fee and photographic documentation • NBC provides a photo checklist • Can return electronically or as snapshots

How to Become a CDL • Application is reviewed • Staff checks for completeness and removes name of laboratory • Independent Reviewer makes determination • CDL granted • Notification and materials sent • New CDLs recognized on website • “Provisional Approvals” may require additional documentation

  13. How Long Does it Take? • Completing the Application & Photos • Depends on laboratory • Photos require labeling • Plan on two weeks • Getting determination • Once NBC sends your application and photos for review, a response is expected within two weeks
